Deactivating your Facebook account lets you withdraw from the site without losing all your saved data. When your account is deactivated, people cannot see your profile or find you in searches. Yet, if you ever wish to return to Facebook, you can reactivate your account with your profile, friends list, photos and other information intact. Use deactivation when you plan to be inactive for some time or when you want to stop using Facebook but are reluctant to permanently delete your account.
Instructions
1
Log in to Facebook. Click "Account Settings" on the "Account" drop-down menu in the upper right corner of any page.
2
Click "Security" in the left column of the page. Click the "Deactivate your account" link at the bottom of the "Security Settings" area.
3
Click the radio button that most closely corresponds to your reason for deactivating your Facebook account. When you click a button, a pop-up box may appear, offering solutions to the issue or giving a reminder. For example, if you cite privacy concerns, Facebook suggests ways to protect your privacy on the site.
4
Enter more details in the text box next to "Please explain further."
5
Click the "Groups" check box to mark all open groups you have as closed. If you assign another member to serve as group admin in your absence, the group can continue. Click "Edit" next to the group name to assign a new admin.
6
Check the box next to "Email opt out" if you do not want friends to be able to send you group or event invitations or tag you in photos.
7
Click "Confirm."
